Ready to leave the classroom and get stuck into something more practical? Then Brickwork could be for you. During your course you'll learn in a practical way about building methods and construction technology as well as basic brick and block laying skills and cavity walling. As you progress you'll move on to learn about building solid walling, isolated and attached piers, cavity walling, forming masonry structures and interpreting drawings. You will undertake work experience with local construction companies working on real projects. Choosing to study Brickwork at the Grimsby Institute will allow you to benefit from the experience and knowledge of the many regional businesses we work with here at the Institute, as well as the guidance and support of our experienced tutors. As one of our learners you will have the opportunity to compete at the Guild of Bricklayers and Skillbuild WorldSkills competitions. Previous trips have included; Birmingham WorldSkills event, manufacturers, modular building visits and local building sites. The course includes the following modules - Carry out safe working practices, Information, quantities and communicating with others, Building methods and construction technology, Basic block laying skills , Basic bricklaying skills, Basic cavity walling, Contribute to setting out and building masonry structures up to damp course level.
When you do a vocational qualification you will learn in a workshop, salon or studio as appropriate for your subject and you will usually be assessed through practical assessments, projects, assignments and oral and written questions. There may be exams in some subjects and your tutor will prepare you for these.
Entry requirements for our courses depend on the specific requirements of each Programme of Study and an individual’s previous experience, which will all be discussed during the interview process. The following is a guide as to what you might be expected to achieve to gain entry on to a particular level of a course.
Maths and English Language at grade 1 or above.
Successful students may progress onto the next level in their chosen subject, into employment or an apprenticeship, or, after a level 3 qualification, to Higher Education at the University Centre Grimsby or other other University.
