Overview

Brickwork is a practical course where you will be working in the Brick Workshop on the Nuns Corner Campus, learning different techniques such as how to mix mortar and build different types of structures.

Details

During your course you will learn in a practical environment about building methods and construction technology as well as basic brick and block laying skills, cavity walling, planning and measuring, site surveying, forming masonry structures and interpreting drawings. Here you will also get to learn about the principles of construction and the health and safety aspects of working on a building site.

You will undertake mandatory work experience to develop a wide range of skills by working on live construction sites, and we work closely with many regional businesses.

As one of our learners you will have the opportunity to compete at the Guild of Bricklayers and Skillbuild WorldSkills competitions. Previous trips have included; Birmingham WorldSkills event, manufacturers, modular building visits and local building sites.

The course includes the following modules - Carry out safe working practices, Information, quantities and communicating with others, Building methods and construction technology, Basic block laying skills , Basic bricklaying skills, Basic cavity walling, Contribute to setting out and building masonry structures up to damp course level.


How will it be delivered?

When you do a vocational qualification you will learn in a workshop, salon or studio as appropriate for your subject and you will usually be assessed through practical assessments, projects, assignments and oral and written questions. There may be exams in some subjects and your tutor will prepare you for these.

Entry requirements

Entry requirements for our courses depend on the specific requirements of each Programme of Study and an individual’s previous experience, which will all be discussed during the interview process. The following is a guide as to what you might be expected to achieve to gain entry on to a particular level of a course.

GCSEs grades1-2 or E to G or equivalent, including Foundation Awards and Entry Level Certificates.

Your next steps...

Successful students may progress onto the next level in their chosen subject, a range of careers in the building trade, an apprenticeship, or after a Level 3 qualification, to HNC/HND in Construction at the University Centre Grimsby or other universities.
