The world really is your oyster when you study Travel and Tourism with the Grimsby Institute. This vast and varied industry will open the door to all kinds of careers and could see you travelling the world. Tourism is essential to our economy and employs in excess of two million people. The travelling starts right here on the course with the possibility of a residential trip or day trips to London, York Dungeons and the Manchester Trafford Centre. You'll get real insights into the industry with expert talks from pilots, cabin crew, hospitality staff and resort reps. You'll learn about all aspects of the industry including customer service, marketing, event planning and leisure and tourism. You may also get the chance to look at the work of resort reps, airline and cabin crew and cruise reps. Our aeroplane and airport check in facilities as well as the travel agents desk at the Nuns Corner Campus will give you the opportunity to train in realistic surroundings for the travel industry. This is a course that examines how and why people spend their leisure and holiday time. You will learn about customer care as well as marketing leisure and tourism products and services.
Key areas include: The World of Travel & Tourism; Global Destinations; Principles of Marketing in Travel and Tourism; Travel and Tourism Enterprises and Specialist Tourism.
When you do a vocational qualification you will learn in a workshop, salon or studio as appropriate for your subject and you will usually be assessed through practical assessments, projects, assignments and oral and written questions. There may be exams in some subjects and your tutor will prepare you for these.
Entry requirements for our courses depend on the specific requirements of each Programme of Study and an individual’s previous experience, which will all be discussed during the interview process.
The following is a guide as to what you might be expected to achieve to gain entry on to a particular level of a course
4 GCSEs grade 3 or above, or equivalent, including Math's and English Language.
Successful students may progress onto the next level in their chosen subject, into employment or an apprenticeship, or, after a level 3 qualification, to Higher Education at the University Centre Grimsby or other other University.
Potential careers include: Cabin Crew; Travel agent; Tour operator; Aviation operations; Hotel management; Tourist attraction management.
Potential courses in education include: Leeds Beckett, Manchester Metropolitan, UCG, Sunderland & Lincoln. Some learners have also gone on to work in Florida on a 6- or 12-month internship through BSG Interns, working in world class resorts throughout the Sunshine state.
