This exciting, emerging area of contemporary design blends art and technology, drawing on both your technical skills and aesthetic awareness. This programme will equip you for a career in commercial sectors such as engineering, advertising, visual effects, medicine, product and industrial design, user experience design, virtual, mixed and augmented reality and entertainment design.
You will also learn transferable artistic skills such as perspective, composition and depth, meaning you can work across a variety of exciting digital and artistic disciplines within the 3D community. In your second year, you will develop skills within commercial contexts and choose your specialism for a studio project module. You will learn how to create 3D visualisation for the commercial world, before designing and presenting your project work to a professional standard.

How will it be delivered?
Will focus on the acquisition of 3D Visualisation skills such as 3D modelling, texturing and lighting. These skills will be complemented with art fundamentals such as perspective, composition, light, colour and depth in order to develop fully rounded 3D Visualisers and Artists equipped with transferable artistic skills, able to work across many disciplines within 3D. The programme begins with a basic, fundamental approach and assumes no prior knowledge of 3D Visualisation. It is recognised that students will a have variety of skill level and experience and the programme is designed to build in a sequential manner from the basics to more advanced work in a measured and manageable way. Importance is placed upon the acquisition of the skills and knowledge to be able to learn independently and to develop critical awareness. This is facilitated through a variety of learning and teaching methods such as tutorials, group critiques, discussion groups, peer learning activity, projects, lectures, workshops, seminars, study visits, demonstrations, skills-based workshops, educational visits, on-site learning, ‘live projects’, learning agreements, exhibition and group presentation.
Will focus on the development of skills within commercial contexts and scenarios and the opportunity to move towards specialism within a specialist studio project module at the end of level 5. At level 5, although there is an increasing emphasis on independent study and project management, teaching in the form of demonstrations and workshops will be delivered in a group and individual way and at level 5 will align more with individual students work. The assignments are project based and allow for individual specialism in a far greater way than at level 4 previously. Students at this level will produce work which is more closely aligned to their career aspirations and this will progress with each module, allowing for critical reflection, mistake making and a progressive level of skills and knowledge which will gradually allow students to reach their potential.
Applicants will require 80 UCAS points in an art and design related subject, or 60 Access-to-HE Credits (of which a minimum of 45 must be at Level 3). Applicants are required to hold English and Maths GCSE (or equivalent) at Grade C/4.
All applicants must have a portfolio of 3D/art/design/computer graphics work with evidence of a basic understanding or art fundamentals: composition, perspective, depth, light, colour and anatomy.
The University Centre Grimsby will also encourage applications from non-traditional learners who lack formal academic qualifications. All such non-traditional applicants will be interviewed, set a creative project with a short written evaluation and a judgement made considering their academic potential and relevant experience.
Accreditation of prior learning
Applicants may be admitted with credit for prior certificated learning (APcL) or work/life experience or other uncertificated learning (APeL) – refer to the HE07 Admissions, Admissions Appeals and APEL (Student Transfers).
