The University of Hull
The University of Hull has been changing the way people think for 90 years. Our motto, Lampada Ferens, translates as ‘carrying the light of learning’, and over the years, we’ve shared that light with thousands of people from across the world.
As England’s 14th-oldest university, we have a proud heritage of academic excellence, and a history of creating and inspiring life-changing research. And we have no plans to stop helping to build a better world.
The University of Hull was founded in 1927 – originally as University College Hull - with 39 students and 14 ‘one-man’ departments. We’ve come a long way since then. The University now has more than 16,000 students and around 2,500 employees, including more than 1,000 academic staff.
Our Royal Charter says our mission is to “…advance education, scholarship, knowledge and understanding by teaching and research, for the benefit of individuals and society at large”.
We interpret our mission in a modern context with a renewed focus on excellence in learning, teaching, research and enterprise, a transformative student experience and being an internationally-engaged anchor institution for our surrounding regions.
Our vision is for the University of Hull to be recognised for academic excellence that empowers people to shape the future.
Our ambitions are bold and challenging – we’ll pursue our vision with a determination to exceed expectations, to contribute ever greater outcomes towards shaping a better world, and to encourage our students to strive for excellence.

Here at the University of Hull, colleagues and students are uniting in action towards becoming carbon neutral. We’re rising to the challenge, leading the way to help to solve some of these complex problems. Not just for our region, but for the world beyond our shores. We’re also committed to providing our students with top-class facilities and an ideal environment in which to live and learn, which is why we’re undergoing a £200-million project to dramatically improve our buildings and facilities.
Our new luxury student accommodation, The Courtyard, is now open, with an even bigger, £130-million accommodation complex coming on our west campus soon. Our £28-million health campus, spearheaded by the state-of-the-art Allam Medical Building, opened last September, the development of our sports facilities includes an eight-court sports hall, 110-station fitness suite, floodlit pitch and pitch-side changing rooms. And we’ve also spent £9.5 million on turning Middleton Hall into one of the region’s best performance venues and cinemas.
Cutting Edge Research
The University has particular research expertise in social justice, environmental technologies and maritime history. Our work in healthcare, 3D visualization and nanotechnology is also widely respected. In research terms, we’re perhaps best known for developing liquid-crystal technology. For that breakthrough, we received the Queen’s Award for Technological Achievement.
In the 2014 national Research Excellence Framework (REF), 62% of our research was judged to be internationally excellent.
From our friendly academics, to our beautiful campus, and our superb facilities, there are more reasons than ever to choose Hull. Come and see why the University of Hull could be the place where you make your future.
